His regiment spent its entire service guarding Confederate prisoners of war at Camp Douglas, Chicago, IL. At some point he was promoted Corporal of the same company. He was mustered out with his company on October 6, 1862. He reenlisted as a Private in Company B, 64th Illinois Volunteer Infantry on February 15, 1864. He was mustered out with his company on July 11, 1865. He died on September 5, 1899 of paralysis at the age of 55. He is buried in grave 4 at Clarks Cemetery in Clarks, Nebraska.

He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant on August 8, 1862 and promoted to First Lieutenant on June 3, 1862. He resigned his commission and left the Army on July 21, 1864. He died on July 7, 1907 at the age of 69. He is buried at Gore Hill Cemetery in Sydney, Australia.
